How did Pete Rose receive his nickname Charlie Hustle?

Peter Edward Rose or Pete Rose is an American former professional baseball player. He had played in the Major League Baseball (1963 – 1986) and also managed the Cincinnati Reds (1984 – 1989). Rose won many awards for his outstanding performance and services during his life, but something changed the year he won the Rookie of the year award.

What happened the same year he won the Rookie award?

During the spring training in the year of the Rookie award, he also welcomed another achievement in his life. He was given a nickname – Charlie Hustle, by the very famous American professional baseballer, Whitney Ford. According to known facts, it was given to him when he chose to sprint over jogging during his spring training.

What was the story from Mickey Mantle’s perspective?

Mickey Mantle, another former American baseball player, told a different story. According to him, Ford called him Charlie Hustle, for the first time when Rose ran towards the wall and jumped high to catch the ball hit by Mickey Mantle. And when Rose went back to the dugout, Ford said: “Did you see Charlie Hustle out there?”

Why Rose won the Rookie of the Year award?

Rose won the Rookie of the Year award the same year because of batting .272 with a .334 OBP with a total 170 hits. With that, he went to get one of the most impressive “counting stats” careers in the history of the baseball game.

  • All-Star game selections – 17
  • Gold glove awards – 2
  • World Series Rings – 3

His career as a manager

He started his career as a manager in 1984, while he was still playing until the year 1989. Due to his gambling issues, he was in the list of the permanently ineligible person in 1989 to manage the sports team. He was not just into gambling but was also addicted to betting on Reds games.

The news leaked and stated that he bet on at least 52 Reds games between 1986 and 1987; however, no solid proof was available. He was also barred from the Hall of Fame because of his bad habits.

Other career options explored by Pete Rose:

  • Pete Rose served at Fort Knox with the US Army Reserves for about six months.
  • He worked as a cook for six years with the 478th Engineering Battalion at Fort Thomas. However, he was only supposed to show up only for one weekend a month. He was allowed to leave early so that he could make out time for the Reds’ games.
