Remembering Bulgaria’s Stunning Performance in the 1994 World Cup

The history of sports is full of drama and moments that defy the imagination. Whether it be the Miracle on Ice or Babe Ruth’s called shot, athletes have a way of persevering through difficult moments and leaving their fans speechless. One of the most famous examples of a team defying expectations and creating its own legend is the story of the 1994 Bulgarian soccer team. In one of the most famous stories in the history of the sport, the Bulgarians placed fourth in the 1994 FIFA World Cup despite many outsiders doubting that they would ever even qualify for the event. The story of the 1994 Bulgarian soccer team shows how skill, grit, and a little bit of good fortune can often combine to set people on the road to glory.

Coming into the qualifying rounds for the World Cup, Bulgaria’s chances looked grim. To get to the championship, Bulgaria had to finish within the top two spots of its division. With top contenders like France and Sweden playing in Bulgaria’s group, sports analysts predicted the team’s chances of going to the World Cup as very low. Going into the final two games of the qualifiers, Bulgaria’s fate seemed to be sealed. With Bulgaria sitting in third place, France led the division by 5 points, with Sweden following close behind with 3 points.

Soccer fans were soon shocked by France’s defeat to Israel, placing them in a match against Bulgaria for the division’s final spot in the World Cup. Even though France was heavily favored to win the match, Bulgaria’s team, which was led by Hristo Stoichkov and Emil Kostadinov, rallied the players to a tie. With only one minute remaining, French player David Ginola was given a free kick. Instead of hanging on to the ball, Ginola chose to pass to forward Eric Cantona. Missing Cantona, the Bulgarians took control of the ball, allowing Kostadinov to score the winning goal. Even though Bulgaria won the game and would be going to the World Cup, many in the media placed the blame for France’s loss on Ganola instead of the skill of the Bulgarian team. France’s coach Gerard Houllier even resigned after the match and continues a feud with Ginola over the game till this day.

Going into the first round, most sportscasters cast doubt on Bulgaria’s ability to effectively compete in the World Cup, arguing that the team’s victory in the qualifiers was more due to mistakes by the French team instead of achievements by the Bulgarians. Bulgaria’s first game in the Cup seemingly proved their naysayers correct, with Bulgaria losing to Nigeria by a massive 3 to 0 margin. Nevertheless, Bulgaria came back swinging in their second game, defeating Greece 4 to 0.

Bulgaria’s next match was set against the highly favored Argentinian team. Led by Captain Diego Maradona, sports pundits predicted that the Argentinians would easily send Bulgaria packing before they could make the next round. As fate would have it, circumstances once again altered the course of the game in favor of Bulgaria. Maradona was disqualified from playing in the remainder of the World Cup after failing a drug test. Without their captain and best player, Argentina suffered a humiliating defeat to Bulgaria, losing 2 to 0.

Making it into the round of 16, Bulgaria beat Mexico, making it to the quarter finals, where they were soon paired against Germany. Going into their match with Germany, sports pundits had even less optimism for the Bulgarians, pointing out that Germany had placed in the finals of every World Cup since 1982. For much of the game, control over the ball ebbed and flowed, until both teams were tied 1-1. Just then, Bulgarian midfielder Yordan Letchkov bounced the ball off his balding head, scoring the winning goal and advancing the team to the next round.

Going forward, Bulgaria’s luck ran out in their semifinal match against Italy. Despite the best efforts of Stoichkov and the rest of the team, Bulgaria lost their match against Italy 2 to 1. Later that week, the team also lost their bid for third place against Sweden, losing 4 to 0. Despite not winning the competition, the 1994 Bulgarian team nevertheless proved themselves to be true champions by their steadfast determination in qualifying for the World Cup and their perseverance in the face of harsh criticism that they did not belong in the tournament.
