There is a essence in sports that cannot be matched by any other aspect of society. In sports and in life, many of us are inspired by the comeback story. There have been so many times that we have seen teams come back from huge deficits in order to win games. Whether these comebacks would happen in the playoffs or the regular season, those comebacks are amazing stories that would never soon be forgotten. However, there is another type of comeback that is worth looking into. It is the comeback stories of individuals that have persevered through a major trial, difficulty or obstacle. There are so many examples of this. We will take a look at some of the greatest comeback stories in all of sports in this article.

1. George Foreman

George Foreman found himself on top of the boxing world when he became heavyweight champion at the age of 23 years old. He did this by beat Joe Frazier in 1973. He was known for fighting in the “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire against Muhammad Ali. Foreman would initially retire from boxing in 1977. However, George Foreman would make a triumphant return to the sport at age 45.

Despite being an underdog, George Foreman was able to defeat George Moorer to recapture the heavyweight title more than 20 years after his first heavyweight title reign started. Foreman showed that his boxing form stood the test of time.

2. Nancy Kerrigan

Nancy Kerrigan was one of the hopefuls for Team USA’s figure skating chances going into the 1994 Winter Olympics. Her main rival was Tonya Harding. Unfortunately, Nancy Kerrigan would suffer an injury due to her rival orchestrating an attack. It was clearly done so that Harding would gave a competitive advantage. As a result of her injuries, Kerrigan initially withdraw from competitive figure skating prior to the Olympics.

However, she would recover just enough to earn a spot on the U.S Olympic team for the 1994 Olympics. Through determination and grit, she would earn a silver medal in the Olympics. Ironically, Tonya Harding would finish in 8th place.

3. Clint Malarchuk

Clint Malarchuk had a serious injury during a hockey game. During a collision with his opponent on the ice, Malarchuk would suffer a deep cut to his neck. It was so gruesome that blood was pouring out of his neck. Apparently, the blade of his opponent’s boot had cut Malarchuk. 300 stitches were required to fix this wound.

Amazingly enough, Malarchuk was back playing hockey after two weeks. What a comeback!

4. Carson Palmer

Carson Palmer was an NFL quarterback that suffered one of the worst knee injuries one could possibly have. He suffered a torn ACL and MCL. On top of that, he dislocated his knee and suffered cartilage damage.

Nevertheless, Carson Palmer managed to play in the NFL again after having his knee reconstructed. Palmer threw for over 4,000 words and have a QB rating over 90%.

5. Muhammad Ali

It is common knowledge that Muhammad Ali was suspended from boxing during the prime of his career. He was suspended for refusing to go fight in the Vietnam War after he was drafted.

Ali would eventually clear his name and be let back into boxing by the boxing association. However, things has drastically changed since he had been gone.

Joe Frazier was the kingpin of the sport. He beat Ali in the “Fight of the Century”. However, Muhammad Ali would end up beating Joe Frazier in the rematch and than he would beat George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire in “The Rumble in the Jungle.”
